Intern- Citizenship and American Identity

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Maryland's Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has an international network of partners.

The intern will be part of the Aspen Institute Citizenship and American Identity Program (CAI). This policy program focuses on the challenge of sustaining strong citizenship in America and coherent national identity in an age of demographic flux and severe inequality.

Basic Function:
The Citizenship and American Identity Program seeks a full-time or part-time intern. The intern will be a core team member, working under the direction of the associate director to provide communications, programmatic, and administrative support to team. This position is three months with possibility for continuation and/or growth.

Communications Responsibilities

Support the Citizenship and American Identity Program team in the communications and marketing efforts, including:

  • Searching for and drafting relevant content (written and graphic) to promote the program's projects, events, publications, blog posts, etc.
  • Assisting in scheduling and outreach to social media partners.
  • Supporting the team in developing and maintaining high quality web pages for the Program.
  • Assisting with developing high-quality email communications and maintaining contact database.

Programmatic Responsibilities

Support the Citizenship and American Identity Program team in the preparation and development of a initiatives and corresponding events. This includes assisting with:

  • Drafting and editing of program materials and correspondences;
  • Creating event logistics and play-by-plays;
  • Coordinating and following-up with select speakers and partners;
  • Coordinating varying aspects of event planning such as venue development and local marketing, as necessary;
  • Coordinating various aspects of event implementation and execution;
  • Researching possible partners, speakers, and various components of events;

Administrative Responsibilities

Assist the Citizenship and American identity Program with administrative details, including:

  • Database maintenance
  • Program billing as appropriate
  • Phone & email support as needed
  • Work with staff and partners to confirm travel and other logistics as assigned

Knowledge, Education and Experience

Qualified candidates should have the following:

  • Passion for the Citizenship and American Identity Program mission
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite especially Word, Excel and other database programs
  • Familiarity or a willingness to learn Adobe Creative Suite such as InDesign and/or Photoshop
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively within a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including a desire to learn and the ability to be flexible
  • Ability to exercise professional discretion, judgment and diplomacy
  • Experience with websites and social media
  • Event organization, administrative experience, and intellectual curiosity a plus
